Barker House is a great place
I have been living at Barker House for two years and I have to say that it is a really nice place! Every apartment building/rental has nuisance people, it doesn't matter where it is or how much money you pay and yes, there were some nuisance people at the building but they are all gone. Management is not confrontational and tries to work things out in everyone's best interests.
Two years ago I met one person who brought bed bugs in, in a bed given to her by a 'friend'; What I heard from... other residents is that they have no issues of any kind, and there are no bugs in their units. The bed bugs are an isolated incident, and there aren't any bed bugs in the building AT ALL. Also, COMCAST is the sole provider in the building and the company does not owe them any money! The wifi is great and my girlfriend and I have no problems with it. As for the fiber optics comment: There is no fiber optic cabling in all of Manitou Springs, which is why this building had no fiber optic cable.
If you are looking for a safe, clean, and very affordable living in Manitou Springs, then do try the Barker House. I have met several people who have been living in the building for many years and they tell me that it's 'better than it's ever been'. We've been here two years and we have no complaints. The rules are strictly enforced, so if you don't like rules then Barker House is not for you. Our Manager is great, she keeps the place looking and feeling good, every day. If you're thinking of applying here, go ahead, you will love it!

Mold, Cat Urine, and Bed Bugs
I lived in the Barker House from Summer of 2014 to Winter of 2014. Here's my experience:
- II toured the unit I was to rent. It smelled of cat Urine and had hole/hooks in the walls. I was told by the Manager on Site (MoS) that both of these issues would be fixed and I was not to be charged for them. My friends and I arrived on move in day to an apartment satired in the smell and had to wait 4 hours for it to air out. I was later charged for the holes and hooks in the wall after I moved.
- I... found out after sending a testing kit to a lab that I had black mold in the unit's bathroom waterlines. I was able to renegotiate my lease due to a roommate being added, thankfully this allowed me to move out the following month.
- My friends and I were offered drugs and witnessed drug deals by multiple residents.
- My job required me to telecommute after a promotion. I was unable to get Comcast to my apartment due to management owing them money. Their "free WiFi" is from a 3rd party in Denver that hasn't even upgraded to fiber optics yet and on a good day, I'd test for .89 Mbps. Barely enough to check email and impossible to stream Netflix or Hulu on.
- Had a noisy neighbor who moved into a STUDIO apartment with two children who would kick my wall at night. The mother was often drunk in the halls and would always come home late at night and slam her door. Management never did anything but talk to her, even after she treated me just for asking her to stop slamming her door and letting her kids kick my wall.
- Got a notice that my floor had units infested with bed bugs and would see the powder to kill them with all over the place.stayed this way until I finally left.
I wouldn't recommend this place or it's awful management company to anyone.
